National Blockchain Framework Launched to Enhance Digital Services and Trust

In a significant step towards advancing digital governance, Shri S. Krishnan, Secretary of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), launched the Vishvasya-Blockchain Technology Stack. This initiative offers Blockchain-as-a-Service (BaaS) through a geographically distributed infrastructure, supporting a range of permissioned blockchain applications. The launch event also unveiled the NBFLite platform, Praamaanik for verifying mobile app origins, and the National Blockchain Portal, all part of MeitY’s larger vision to foster trust, transparency, and security in digital service delivery.

National Blockchain Framework: Driving Trust and Innovation

The National Blockchain Framework (NBF), developed under MeitY, is designed to promote research and application development, while offering secure and transparent digital services. NBF’s architecture includes distributed infrastructure, a core framework, smart contracts, an API gateway, and robust security features, ensuring the scalability and interoperability of blockchain applications. Hosted on NIC data centers in Bhubaneswar, Pune, and Hyderabad, the framework currently supports two permissioned blockchain platforms, with potential for further extension.

Blockchain Sandbox for Startups and Academia

To encourage innovation, NBF introduced NBFLite, a blockchain sandbox specifically designed for startups and academia. This platform facilitates rapid prototyping, research, and skill-building in blockchain technology. Developed through collaboration with institutions like C-DAC, NIC, IIT Hyderabad, IIIT Hyderabad, and others, this effort underlines India’s commitment to advancing blockchain research and its real-world applications.

Enhancing Digital Service Delivery for Citizens

Shri S. Krishnan emphasized that the National Blockchain Framework will enhance the security, trust, and transparency of citizen-centric digital services. This initiative aligns with India’s broader goal of becoming a global leader in blockchain technology, driving economic growth and digital empowerment.

Additional Secretary Shri Bhuvnesh Kumar noted the potential for blockchain technology to transform governance by making public services more transparent, efficient, and accountable. He highlighted the need to scale NBF applications across various states and departments, encouraging further innovation and expansion on the NBF stack.

Praamaanik: Ensuring Mobile App Security

Another important innovation is Praamaanik, a blockchain-enabled solution designed to verify the origins of mobile applications. This tool enhances security in the digital ecosystem by providing a reliable mechanism to ensure app authenticity.

The launch of the National Blockchain Framework marks a pivotal moment for India’s digital transformation. By creating a secure, transparent, and efficient blockchain ecosystem, MeitY is not only enhancing governance but also positioning India as a global leader in blockchain technology. Through collaboration, research, and innovation, NBF is set to revolutionize digital service delivery and foster a future of secure digital empowerment for citizens.
